Improving Potato Processing Efficiency with Decanter Centrifuge Technology for Starch Recovery and Water Recycling

Potato processing requires large amounts of water during cleaning and preparation stages. The generated process water usually contains suspended starch particles, fine solids, and organic residues. Traditionally, many food processing plants rely on sedimentation tanks to remove these solids. However, this method often requires significant space, long retention time, and may deliver unstable separation results when operating conditions change.

To address these challenges, GN Separation recently supplied a GN Separation for a potato processing plant to improve starch recovery and process water recycling. The system is designed to continuously separate suspended starch and fine solids from potato slice washing water, allowing clarified water to be reused in the production process.

A decanter centrifuge uses high centrifugal force to achieve efficient solid-liquid separation in a continuous operation mode. Compared with conventional settling methods, it provides faster separation, requires a smaller installation footprint, and offers more stable performance under varying feed conditions. These advantages make it particularly suitable for modern food processing facilities where production efficiency, automation, and resource utilization are increasingly important.

In this application, the recovered starch can be collected as a valuable by-product, while the clarified water can be recycled, reducing fresh water consumption and lowering wastewater treatment requirements. This not only improves production economics but also supports more sustainable manufacturing practices.

The GN Separation supplied for this project features an optimized bowl and conveyor design to ensure reliable solids conveying and consistent separation performance. With variable frequency drive (VFD) control, the equipment can be adjusted according to different processing requirements, providing operational flexibility for food industry applications.

Beyond potato processing, decanter centrifuges are widely used for solid-liquid separation in various industries, including potato starch production, vegetable washing, fruit processing, cassava and sweet potato processing, beverage manufacturing, wastewater treatment, and other applications involving valuable solids recovery.

As food manufacturers continue to focus on water conservation, waste reduction, and improved resource efficiency, advanced separation technologies such as decanter centrifuges are becoming increasingly important. By providing reliable solid-liquid separation solutions, GN Separation helps customers recover valuable resources, optimize production processes, and move toward more sustainable operations.
