GN Separation has recently completed the commissioning of a 30-inch (760 mm) bowl diameter Decanter centrifuge for a mining slurry concentration project in China. The equipment has been successfully put into operation, providing the customer with a continuous and automated solution for solid-liquid separation.
Mining slurry typically contains large quantities of water and fine mineral particles. Efficient concentration can help reduce the volume of material requiring transportation, lower logistics costs, and improve the recovery and utilization of valuable mineral resources.
The Decanter centrifuge supplied for this project is one of the largest models in the company’s product portfolio. Its high-speed rotating bowl generates strong centrifugal force, accelerating the sedimentation of fine solid particles. The differential speed between the bowl and screw conveyor continuously transports concentrated solids to the discharge outlet, while clarified liquid is discharged separately. This enables continuous operation with minimal manual intervention.
Due to the abrasive nature of mineral slurry, wear resistance is essential for long-term operation. The centrifuge bowl is manufactured from duplex stainless steel, providing excellent mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. Replaceable tungsten carbide tiles are applied to the screw flights to protect critical components from abrasive mineral particles and extend service life.
The equipment is also equipped with a variable frequency drive (VFD) control system. Operators can adjust the bowl speed and differential speed according to changing slurry characteristics, helping optimize separation performance while balancing processing capacity, energy consumption, and equipment wear.
Compared with conventional gravity thickening methods, decanter centrifuges offer a more compact, automated, and efficient solution for mining slurry concentration. Their ability to continuously process slurry and discharge concentrated solids makes them suitable for mineral processing, tailings treatment, and other demanding industrial applications.
