Compared with conventional decanter centrifuges, which typically operate at around 3,000 G, a disc stack separator can generate significantly higher centrifugal force. GN disc stack separators can reach up to approximately 12,000 G, enabling efficient clarification of liquids containing fine suspended solids.

Inside the rotating bowl, a specially designed disc stack provides a large effective settling area. Under high centrifugal force, fine solids migrate toward the bowl periphery, while the clarified liquid moves toward the liquid outlet.

This configuration makes the disc stack separator particularly suitable for applications where conventional gravity settling or lower-G centrifugal separation may not provide sufficient clarification.

Although the disc stack separator provides high centrifugal force, the feed characteristics remain critical to separation performance.

For seaweed slurry applications, the feed should generally have a relatively low solids concentration and should be free of large particles or fibrous materials. As a preliminary guideline, a feed solids concentration of around 1% is preferred, while the feed should generally remain below approximately 3% solids for disc separator operation.

If the incoming seaweed slurry contains excessive coarse particles, fibers, or high concentrations of solids, upstream treatment may be required. Depending on the actual material characteristics, a vibrating screen, decanter centrifuge, or other solids-removal equipment can be used before the disc stack separator.

For applications with relatively high or variable solids content, GN Separation can consider a two-stage separation process.

The first stage is used to remove coarse and/or relatively heavy solids from the slurry. The pretreated liquid is then fed to the disc stack separator for fine clarification.

This process reduces the solids loading entering the disc separator and allows the high-speed separator to focus on removing fine suspended particles.

The final process configuration should be determined according to the actual seaweed slurry characteristics, including solids concentration, particle size distribution, viscosity, temperature, and required liquid quality.

The GN disc stack separator integrates a high-speed rotating bowl and disc stack within a compact machine design. Its continuous centrifugal separation process can reduce the need for large settling tanks and provide a relatively compact solution where fine clarification is required.

Depending on the application, GN Separation can also integrate the separator with upstream screening, feeding, and other separation equipment to form a complete treatment process.

In addition to seaweed slurry clarification, GN disc stack separators can be considered for a variety of fine liquid clarification applications, including:

Vegetable oil clarification

Dairy and beverage processing

Biotechnology and pharmaceutical processes

Biofuel production

Marine and oily liquid clarification

Fine solid-liquid separation in industrial processes

The actual separation performance and suitable capacity depend on the feed properties and required outlet quality. GN Separation therefore recommends evaluating representative material before final equipment selection, particularly for new or difficult-to-characterize applications.

With decanter centrifuges, disc stack separators, vibrating screens, and other separation equipment, GN Separation provides centrifugal and mechanical separation solutions for different industrial processes.

For seaweed slurry and other fine clarification applications, GN can evaluate the complete separation process based on the customer’s actual feed characteristics and treatment requirements.

GN Separation has recently supplied a 2-Phase Disc Separator for a seaweed slurry separation application in Southeast Asia.
